This afternoon saw the launch of a collaboration between Swatch and Hodinkee in the web-based release of two summer-inspired wristwatches for Swatch’s Flik Flak children’s range, as well as their fully automatic Sistem 51 line. Hodinkee are a New York-based watch journalist and e-commerce site selling new and vintage watches. Initially founded in 2008, Hodinkee was named after the Czech and Slovak word for wristwatch: ‘hodinky’. Swatch was the first brand that Hodinkee produced a watch with back in 2017 with today marking the fourth occasion that they have collaborated.

The first and only adult watch of this collaboration is the Swatch Sistem 51 Hodinkee Summer Edition. The watch costs just $170 making it one of the most affordable watches in Hodinkee’s curated/partnered range. The Summer Edition features a crisp white 42mm plastic case with a matching integrated silicone strap in combination with a white Sub-style dial with royal blue 12, 3 and 9 o’clock indices and an integrated date window down at 6 o’clock. The simplistic, summery look is completed with the remaining indices, Swatch branding, hour and minute hands, ‘automatic’ script and surrounding minute track all in black. The second hand is finished in a nicely-contrasting light blue.

The clear plastic case back is a bit of a treat with an imaginative circular rotor that doesn’t obstruct the view of the movement base plate and bridges which are printed with an interlocking “H” (for Hodinkee) pattern in blue and white. The movement itself is the fantastic 3Hz Swatch Caliber SISTEM51 (ETA C10.111) featuring a clever ‘Nivachron’ balance spring that offers an impressive accuracy of +/-7 seconds per day with a price-point leading 90-hour power reserve that puts the whole Rolex catalogue to shame. ‘Nivachron’ is a titanium-based alloy that’s supposedly resistant to magnetism, shocks, ageing, and temperature variation.

The second release of today’s online launch is the Flik Flak Hodinkee Summer Edition. Founded in 1987, Flik Flak are a ‘child’ of the Swatch Group producing easy-to-read Swiss-made wristwatches for children. Today’s Hodinkee Summer themed release is no different, featuring an unspecified quartz ETA movement and black, blue and ice-blue colour-coded hour, minute and second hands that, along with the corresponding Arabic numerals, are designed to make it easier for kids to learn how to tell the time. The watch even comes with a guide for kids to help them learn how to read an analogue watch face.

Flik Flak has a quality control centre in Switzerland where each one of their watches is tested for a whole month to ensure it can handle life on the wrist of any child. That means shock testing, water pressure testing, and ensuring that every single element of each watch is safe and useable for kids of all ages – very impressive considering that the majority of their watches cost less than £40. While the specifications list that the watch has 30m of water resistance, the company claim that when the Italian fabric strap is coated with jam or mud, parents can simply put their child’s Flick Flack into a sock and then into the washing machine at 40 degrees – these are well-built watches!

Neither of today’s releases are numbered editions, however, Hodinkee claim quantities are limited (shock). Both watches can be bought from the Hodinkee website, as well as at Swatch stores in Switzerland and New York. The Sistem 51 is priced at $170 with the Flik Flack coming in at just $40.
