Initially released in 1989, the AW-500 was G-Shock’s first analog-digital wristwatch.

At the time, the company showed its prowess and proved that analog hands and gears could be made resistant to shock as they had done with digital watches since 1983 when the first G-Shock was introduced.

As part of the re-edition collection, available only in Japan at the time of writing, there will be a mixture of affordable resin and premium stainless steel models. The resin case, bezel, and strap version (Ref. AW-500E) have the same color combination as the original AW-500, and there are also additional colorways, such as red.

For the metal versions (Ref. AWM-500) they have the same dimensions but with a mixture of stainless steel, and some resin used to enhance shock resistance and critical areas of the watch.

Key features include a stopwatch, timer, backlight, and a 7-year battery life. The metal versions feature, in addition, a solar charging system, radio wave reception for automatic time adjustment, and a battery life of up to 28 months.

The dial is protected by a mineral glass and water-resistance is 200 meters. All models share the same dimensions 47.7 mm × 14.7 mm, with a 55.2 mm lug-to-lug measurement. The resin versions weigh 58 grams.
